Translation is about so much more than replacing a word with its equivalence in a different language. Like with all other forms of communication, when translating something you need to know your audience. This isn’t limited to the language they speak, but extends to cultural references, proverbs, traditions, and positive and negative connotations which may not apply to the same words and expressions in a different language.
I grew up in Sweden and still read Swedish magazines, blogs and newspapers online every day. I know the culture because it is mine, and I am very aware of where translations from Swedish to English often go wrong. But I have also spent years in Ireland and am a Londoner since four years back. I have studied at universities both in Sweden and the UK, and have had work published in English as well as Swedish.
